What Is the PBT?

The PBT (Paper-Based Test) is the traditional format: you read a printed test booklet and mark or write your answers on an answer sheet. In TOPIK II, the writing section is handwritten. Because this format has been used for many years, there is a wealth of study material and know-how built around it.

What Is the IBT?

The IBT (Internet-Based Test) is taken on a computer at a designated test center: questions appear on screen and answers are entered directly. The writing section is typed on a keyboard. The number of IBT sessions has been growing steadily in recent years.

Scores and Level Cutoffs Are Different

The most important thing to understand is that the two formats use different maximum scores and different level cutoffs. For TOPIK II, the PBT is scored out of 300 points while the IBT is scored out of 600. A score on one format cannot be converted to the other with simple math — always check each format's own level table.

Both Carry the Same Weight
